POST4: Social media and the degree of openness of society

In mainland China, there are some limitations that forbid mainland students to use some international communication tools such as twitter and the facebook, although there are some other communication tool like renren and sina blog have almost the same fuctions to instead the facebook and twitter, but the content on the internet is quite different. People all over the world use facebook and twitter so that they have chances to meet and know what happens to the different people in different countries, which is quite open to the users. But in mainland China, 90 percent sina and renren users are chinese. People share thoughts and their lives domestically. So comparing with the users who could be able to use the twitter and the facebook, news for mainland people are relatively closed. In HongKong, there are no limitations at all, people are more unconstrained. We can use so may different social media communication tools such as google+, gmail, facebook, twitter, instagram, flickr and so on so forth to share thoughts and some photos in anywhere at anytime. I have to say that citizens in HongKong are more free than the people in mainland China, they are supposed to enjoy the freedom of speech and expression. So the social institution in HongKong is enlightened. Social media could be able to reflect the degree of openness of one society somehow.

  1. I agree with you completely. But in fact it dose not affect me so much because I do not communicate with people I do not familiar with often. No matter how large degree of openness of the SNS, it means little differences for me as I do not like to share my life with strangers. It is not safe enough in my mind.

    1. sorry for my late reply cuz it is really late : )
but indeed that quite affects me. it is going to be a disaster when you deal with the clients worldwide, but you cannot have sufficient freedom of what you say.

  2. I think the openness is related to the content of information. If there are the social media but nobody talk about the topics, the information still cannot be spread to others.

  3. Compared to North Korea, we are luck and we are more lucky because we are in HongKong. We can use facebook and twitter so that we can meet and know what happens to the different people in different countries.
